COMPAY takes the audience on a musical tour that features traditional,
contemporary, and original music from Latin America and the Caribbean.
This amazingly versatile trio keeps toes tapping.
Lead vocalist/guitarist Pablo Valencia, from Chile, sings a wide range of styles. He is as much at ease with a reflective bolero as with an upbeat salsa. The group performs a number of Valencia’s acclaimed original compositions, such as the romantic Cancion Para Dos, the rumba Bello Amor, and the very upbeat salsa song Entumido. On keyboards, Erich Lieth adds spice to the strong Latin rhythms with improvisational piano solos and bass. Chuck Nolan, lead percussionist, intricately weaves the rhythm patterns, be it for a subtle bossa nova or a danceable cumbia. For a dinner crowd they might sing Afro-Cuban sones such as Chan Chan and El Carretero, and then move to Brazil with bossa novas like Corcovado and Girl From Ipanema. Once the dancing starts, they’ll do a Colombian cumbia such as the ever favorite Juana La Cubana, the rousing merengue Modorra, or the popular Venezuelan song Moliendo Café. For some shows they bring along an additional percussionist or soloist. For a more relaxed sound they perform as a duo.
